- Being prepared and having the right tools is key to creating a new site
So, you are here because you wish to create something, but don’t know where to start. Making a living on the internet these days is very much within the realms of possibility, and there are many ways that you can make thousands of dollars online. I would say that my short lived success from playing with clone scripts came from the PwnMyPic Image Host. In its starting days, the amount of traffic that the image host received was phenomenal, advertising revenue pulled in a little, over 100 new member sign ups within two weeks, and an average of 5000 unique hits per day, it was an amazing entry into my career as a webmaster. And now that I look back at the success of this site, it is clear to me how success can be gained from such an endeavor.
This should lead as an example for many other endeavors, so take these words exactly as they are. Just one user experience. At the end of the day, a combination of the following will always ensure that you gain success in your chosen endeavor.
In any case when starting a new website, the most important factor to success is getting to know your audience in advance. Selling ice to a polar bear is a very hard task, but at the same time, I am sure it is possible. If a polar bear were standing in front of you (and for some reason not eating you), if you handed it a large ice cube, in all honesty, it would probably look at it for a bit, and if for some reason that large ice block took its attention for longer than a second, then it would at least do something with it. This is your first step. Provide people with something that grabs their attention, even for a second, create buzz, and if this results in these people giving it a look, then you are on to a winner. You have earned their attention, now you need to retain it.
In the case of the image host, I am an active member in a large online forum. Members of this forum were crying out for an alternative to the large image hosts as their images were always being deleted, and after the AntiSec hack on ImageShack, people wanted an alternative. This was my calling, I took this as an opportunity to announce the arrival of the image host, and over the course of about 4 weeks, the site was tested using my very own critics. Those who demanded the image host in the first place.
That is my strongest form of promotion right there. These are users that are in need, and needless to say, when the image host launched in August, word of mouth spread like wildfire, even stronger than most social networks could ever bring it. It was amazing. This is key to success before launch. Generate back links, generate buzz, and make the launch something for interested users to give a second look. And most importantly, never underestimate the power of an “under construction” banner.
These days, the image host is more of a hobby for me than anything, I still enjoy running the image host, my heart lies in blogging and passing what I learn on to others, and passing those tools on to others. The same with Top Clone Scripts, this is my way of passing those tools on to someone else.
